Welcome to the video that has become a full time occupation for me. Every day I remove hundreds of comments from angry Turks/Greeks who think this lighthearted cover of a 1950's song is an attack on their political views. In fact, it is just Brooklyn's ambassadors of love They Might Be Giants performing 'Istanbul Not Constantinople' live on MTV Europe in 1990.
A UK television appearance from 1990. Sadly, UK music shows still had a policy of lip-synching back then, but TMBG countered that by having a slightly different mix of the song prepared for the occasion.
They Might Be Giants performing their single "The Statue Got Me High" on UK television show The Jonathan Ross Show in 1992, backed by Steve Neive and The Love Band. Watch out for manager Jamie and roadie Adam in the studio audience, and check out Linnell jamming with the house band during the closing titles.
"She's An Angel" live at The Town and Country Club, London UK, 1990.
Watch out for Linnell coughing during the song, and Flansburgh's discussion of the cough at the end!
They Might Be Giants in interview on UK television in 1988.
I think They might have been stung by bees because their lips seem massive on this footage. For a moment I thought the band had been replaced by Thunderbirds.
They Might Be Giants performing their two 1990 singles "Birdhouse In Your Soul" and "Istanbul - Not Constantinople" at Camden Lock in London UK for the TV show 'Rock Steady'. I have seen this same footage doctored for a different TV show elsewhere on YouTube, but this is the original (and it was definately in 1990!)
My own piano arrangment of "Mammal" by They Might Be Giants. As always, apologies for the low fidelity of the recording. It is something I threw together.
