The line from Tacna in Peru to Arica in Northern Chile is isolated from the rest of the Peruvian railway network, and crosses desert for much of the way, finally taking to the road on the approach to Tacna.
Our journey took us on a return trip from Arica in a railcar for an afternoon in Peru.

We travel from Mendosa in Argentina to Santiago de Chile, following the route of the now abandoned trans andean railway. Our journey takes us through stunning scenary to the summit at the Chilian border before dropping quickly through hairpin bends to the valley below.

In October 1997, we travelled from Hearst to Sault Saint Marrie in Ontario Canada aboard the Algoma Central Railway. It was fall time, and the colours were wonderful.

Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, is a breathtaking place, high in the Peruvian Andes. We traveled by train from Cuzco, itself a wonderful journey, before ascending to this hidden city. The views are oustanding, with low clouds adding to the atmosphere. Pictures do not do this justice.

After a quick look round La Serena, we ride south on a small part of the now closed metre gauge Ferronor main line from Coquimbo to Las Cardas in Chile. This is the sparsley populated area north of Santiago.
Some of the nearby track had been washed away as a result of the previous El Nino.

An all day steam hauled trip from El Rancho to Guatemala City in Guatemala. The line is operated by the Railway Development Corporation (RDC), and at the time of the visit, they ran one freight train a day from the Atlantic Coast to Guatemala City.
