A Rube Goldberg machine video found here: http://www.falarious .com/file.php?id=112 7
Reposted because Falarious auto-plays its videos, and that sucks.

Pierre Jaquet-Droz's automaton built between 1768 and 1774. It was not a computer, but was able to write custom lines of text up to 40 characters long. I cannot understand the commentary, but watching it at work is truly fascinating.

Pierre Jaquet-Droz's automaton built between 1768 and 1774. It was not a computer, but was able to drwa four different things, and reguarly blew away the dust from the pencil. I cannot understand the commentary, but watching it at work is truely fascinating.

This video shows a bit of how Pierre Jaquet-Droz's automaton, The Writer, works. Very fascinating stuff, to be sure.
